Cybathlon Main Event

Main content

ETH Zurich hosted the first Cybathlon on October 8, 2016 at the SWISS Arena in Kloten, bringing together pilots with physical disabilities from all over the world to compete using the latest assistive technologies. The Cybathlon is the brainchild of ETH Zurich and NCCR Robotics professor Robert Riener and was forged with three aims in mind; to facilitate exchange between academia and industry, to facilitate discussion between technology developers and people with disabilities and to promote the use of robotic assistive aids to the general public.

The Cybathlon covered six disciplines, each designed to challenge tasks from everyday life that future assistive technologies could help those with disabilities to complete:

  • Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Race
  • Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Bike Race
  • Powered Arm Prosthesis Race
  • Powered Leg Prosthesis Race
  • Powered Exoskeleton Race
  • Powered Wheelchair Race
